We've got you covered for both options;  no-water and self-cleaning and our washing instructions.

The Magic of Self-Cleaning Wool: Caring for Your Luxury Handknitted Items

Our luxury handknitted items are crafted from the finest high-quality wool, a remarkable natural fiber known for its self-cleaning properties. Wool contains a natural layer of lanolin, a waxy coating that repels dirt and odors. This means that with proper care, your woolen items can stay fresh and clean for longer periods without the need for frequent washing.

How to Keep Your Woolen Items Fresh:

  1. Air It Out: After wearing, simply hang your woolen garment in a well-ventilated area. The natural fibers will release any absorbed moisture and odors, leaving your item refreshed.

  2. Spot Clean: For small stains, gently blot the area with a damp cloth and a mild wool detergent. Avoid rubbing, as this can cause pilling or distortion of the fibers.

  3. Avoid Over-Washing: Wool is naturally antibacterial, so frequent washing is unnecessary. When you do need to wash, opt for a gentle hand wash with cold water, using a wool-specific detergent. Lay flat to dry, reshaping the garment to its original form.

  4. Storage: Store your woolen items in a cool, dry place. If storing for long periods, use a breathable cotton bag to protect them from dust and moths, avoiding plastic as it traps moisture.

By following these simple care steps, your handknitted woolen items will maintain their beauty, softness, and durability for years to come. Enjoy!

Washing instructions:

  1. Hand Wash: Gently hand wash your mohair knit in cold water using a small amount of mild detergent specifically for delicate fabrics - see below for which detergents to use.
  2. Rinse: Thoroughly rinse in cold water to remove all detergent.
  3. Drying: Avoid wringing. Gently press out excess water and lay flat on a towel to dry away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
  4. Storage: Store your cardigan folded, not hung, to maintain its shape. Keep it in a cool, dry place.

How to manage shedding:

  • Freezing: Place your knit in a sealed plastic bag and freeze it for a few hours to help reduce shedding.

  • Gentle Brushing: Use a soft garment brush to lightly brush off loose fibers.

  • Wearing: Wear it over smooth fabrics to minimize the appearance of shedding.

What is the best detergent to use?

For delicate fabrics like mohair, it’s best to use a mild detergent specifically designed for wool and other fine fibers. Some great options include:

  • Eucalan: A gentle, no-rinse formula that conditions the fibers.
  • The Laundress Wool & Cashmere Shampoo: Safely cleans and preserves delicate materials.
  • Soak Wash: A no-rinse, eco-friendly option that is gentle on mohair.

These detergents help maintain the softness and integrity of your luxury mohair cardigan. Remember, only use very little!

Just in case you were curious, freezing a mohair garment helps reduce shedding by temporarily stiffening the fibers, making them less likely to loosen and fall off. The cold temperature causes the fibers to contract slightly, which can help them adhere better to the garment, reducing the amount of loose fuzz that typically sheds during wear. This method is particularly effective when done before the first few wears of a new mohair item.

We hope these instructions will be useful in you enjoying your Nizhoni for a long time!
